The global anti-Hijab movement is still gaining momentum. Latest to join this movement are women from Kerala. Video of Muslim women burning Hijab in Kerala went viral on social media.
Kerala Yuktivadi Sangam, a rationalist organisation carried out the anti Hijab protests in Kozikhode, Kerala. The participants had arranged a seminar titled ‘Fanos- Science and Free thinking’ on Sunday. Immediately after the seminar, cameras recorded some Muslim women burning Hijab. The women took off their Hijabs and burnt them publicly.
This is the first reported incident in which Muslim women have shown courage to burn Hijab publicly.
Earlier, Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela had extended her support to the global movement against this patriarchal practice. A famous news anchor Geeta Mohan has also cut her hair in solidarity with Anti-Hijab protests. Acts of Urvashi and Geeta Mohan laudable because these women have shown courage. The courage to stand up against Islamic clergy and moral policing.
The global anti-Hijab movement started after the Iranian morality police killed a twenty two year old woman Mahsa Amini for not wearing Hijab. The sight of Muslim women burning Hijab must have warmed the hearts of oppressed women worldwide. Especially after Bollywood failed to support the cause by extending solidarity with Iranian artist Mandana Karimi.
Regressive groups like PFI have been trying to prop up support for Hijab in Karnataka. Left leaning ‘intellectuals’ have tried to support this oppressive practice by claiming it to be a choice. But, the matter of the fact is that Hijab is not a choice. It is a medieval religious diktat.
No independent minded woman will accept such moral policing and oppression. Strong minded women like Heena Sandhu and Dorsa Derakhshani have already proven that.
