More and more BJP-ruled state governments are moving towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
After Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat is now moving towards implementing ‘one nation one law’ at least in the state. The Gujarat government yesterday formed a committee for the implementation of the UCC in the state.
BJP-ruled Uttarakhand and Himachal governments have already formed expert panels to make Uniform Civil Code a reality in the hill states.
Just before Assembly election in the state, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel said a high-level panel under the chairmanship of a retired Supreme Court/HC judge will examine the need for the UCC in the state and prepare a draft for the code.
Minister of State-Home Harsh Sanghvi said criminal laws are the same for every citizen whereas civil laws are different. In order to remove this discrepancy which is based on religion, the state government has decided to implement the UCC under the provisions of the Constitution.
Cabinet Minister of Education, Science & Technology, Gujarat, Jitu Vaghani has hailed the move. He has tweeted, “The UCC means that all sections of the society irrespective of their religion shall be treated equally according to a common civil law, which shall be applicable to all uniformly.
Development for all, Equal rights for all, appeasement of none- the mantra of the double Engine Government of Gujarat! UCC soon to be implemented in Gujarat. One Nation, One Law and One Civil Code.”
Implement nationwide Uniform Civil Code
UCC is one of the main points in the BJP manifesto. There is a section that believes that entire nation will benefit from UCC. Citizens are hoping that BJP may bring nation wide UCC before 2024 elections.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has criticised the BJP over the UCC move in Gujarat. He has questioned, “Why is the BJP not bringing UCC across the country?”
“Government should introduce UCC after the consent of all communities. The government should take everyone in confidence,” added Kejriwal in a press conference in Bhavnagar.
