Following in footsteps of other BJP-ruled states, Madhya Pradesh is now moving towards implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The state government is forming a committee to look into the matter. “I am in favour of the fact that time has come for a Uniform Civil Code to be implemented in India. Why should anyone marry more than one? I am also forming a committee in Madhya Pradesh,” declared MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during a gathering of tribals in Barwani district on Thursday.
“The time has come for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and one wife norm for everyone. Why should there be two different laws in the country?” he told the gathering.
Other BJP-ruled states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Assam and Karnataka have also started the process for implementing the “one law for one nation” system. Many of them have even formed committees to examine and evaluate the issue for the UCC’s implementation.
What UCC?
Under the UCC, personal laws would be common to all citizens equally, irrespective of their religion, gender, caste, etc. It proposes to have common laws which govern personal matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession. These personal laws of various communities are largely governed by their own religions, currently.
Though, UCC has been one of the top poll promises of the Modi-government, Congress Party has been accusing the BJP of using these laws for its political gains.
