Bengaluru: Close on the heels of Assam and Uttarakhand, the BJP-ruled Karnataka is thinking of UCC. It seems that the state has plans up its sleeves to implement the uniform civil code.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai while speaking to mediapersons, confirmed this in Bengaluru on Saturday.

“Certainly we are thinking very seriously about (implementing) uniform civil code. BJP had made UCC a main promise at all India level in its manifesto,” he said.

Not only Karnataka, but also other BJP-ruled states have already set up committees for the implementation of the code. “We (Karnataka) are looking into it and studying those aspects, and we will take a call on it,” he said.

“As far as the BJP is concerned, it feels that it is desirable to have a uniform civil code,” Bommai added. A couple of BJP-ruled states like Assam and Uttarakhand, have already expressed their intent to implement the uniform civil code, he said.

Bommai also spoke on the issue while addressing party workers in Shivamogga yesterday.

He also spoke of removing the government’s control over temples. “I strongly believe that devotees should manage the temples. In the coming days, we will make provisions in that direction,” he said.

On the anti-conversion law that has been implemented in Karnataka, Bommai said the Supreme Court itself has passed an order saying that forced conversion is a crime.

Prior to this order, some people were calling anti-conversion law as unconstitutional, but the apex court has negated that, CM said.

Bommai also said the steps taken by his government to increase reservation for SCs and STs was revolutionary. Recently, Gujarat state has formed a panel for implementation of UCC in the state.
