Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has backed UCC. He emphasised equal rights for women. The former Supreme Court judge Arun Mishra has advocated the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
He said the UCC will not disturb existing religious practices and ensure equal rights for women. He added the time is ripe for implementing the UCC.
“Article 44 of the Constitution, which contains a constitutional edict to ‘endeavour to secure for citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India’ should no longer remain a dead letter,” said the NHRC chief.
We need to improve the condition of women in vulnerable sections and in rural areas. Article 44 of the Constitution, enabling equality by enacting a Common Civil Code should not remain a dead letter,” Justice Arun Mishra was quoted by ANI.
He said so during his address at the Human Rights Day celebrations organised by the National Human Rights Commission. President of India Draupadi Murmu and United Nations Resident Coordinator for India Shombi Sharp were also there in the event.
Recently, amid protests BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena introduced a private member’s Bill in Rajya Sabha. The bill seeks to provide for a panel to prepare a Uniform Civil Code. Following which, Union minister Nitin Gadkari in an event said its unnatural to have four wives.
