The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has summoned global senior vice president and country head of Amazon India. The summons are over alleged funding to All India Mission, an organisation involved in “unlawful practices.”
The apex child rights body has warned of legal action. It says that if Amazon India country head Amit Agarwal does not appear before it on November 1. The NCPCR has sought certain details about All India Mission and other orphanages funded by the company.
The child rights body had asked the firm to submit an action taken report, within seven days. So far, Amazon India has not responded.
Following which, the NCPCR asked firm’s country head to appear in person before the commission. And, furnish details of the action taken in this matter on November 1. Moreover NCPCR is seeking reasons for delay in submission of the report and also about the action taken on the complaint sent by it.
It was on September 16, the child body had issued a notice to Amazon. The notice was about Amazon’s alleged funding to All India Mission.
The commission had acted following a complaint from NGO Social Justice Forum, Arunachal Pradesh. The NGO has alleged that All India Mission, an organisation registered in the US and the UK, is undertaking “unlawful practices”. It is “illegally converting” children in India.
Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson, NCPCR, tweeted, “After the matter came to our notice, the website stopped observation in India, which amounts to affecting the investigation and destroy the evidence. Thus, it is a serious crime. So, to rescue kids and to know where kids have been kept, Amazon was served notice and reminders. But, for not replying, its main officer has now been summoned to appear.”
