Punjab Police have arrested Amarjit Singh, the pramukh sewadar (chief caretaker) of a Gurudwara in Kapurthala. Amarjit Singh and a mob had brutally killed a man on December 19. The mob killed the unidentified man in the presence of some policemen. Police has registered a case against him and 100 unknown persons for murder, attempt to murder, possessing illegal arms and assaulting police officers on duty.

Amarjit had spotted the youth on the ground floor of Gurudwara premises. The youth was eating food from the kitchen of Gurudwara. Amarjit got hold of him and tied him up. Subsequently, he spread the rumour that the youth was committing sacrilege of Sikh symbols.

In a viral video, he was exhorting Sikh organisations to assemble at this Gurudwara at Nijampura. His accomplices had tied up the hapless victim. Some Sikh men are brutally thrashing the victim.

Amarjit is claiming that the person was doing be-adabi (disrespect) of Sikh scriptures. Further he can be seen saying that the victim will not be handed over to the police.

Amarjit is claiming that they have caught this person committing sacrilege on the lines of the one that took place in Amritsar. He is propagating a conspiracy theory. According to this theory, someone has sent the victim from Delhi to commit sacrilege. Moreove, Amarjit is claiming that someone paid money to the victim to commit this crime.

Who is Amarjit Singh

In its preliminary investigation, Punjab Police has stated that it was not a case of sacrilege. Probably the victim was hungry and entered the premises to get some food. His hunger resulted in his brutal murder at hands of religious fanatics.

Media reports indicate that Amarjit has a shady past. He was a Khalistani supporter and later switched sides to become an informer for the Police. He is a frequent visitor to Pakistan. His son is an ASI in police.

A video showing the victim a day before his lynching is going viral on social media. The person seems to have some mental instability. It seems the unfortunate young man was at the wrong place at the wrong time. He became cannon fodder for fanatics.
